I’ve just been looking at this new online game called Moonbase Alpha, released earlier in the year by AR’s Virtual Heroes lab in conjunction with NASA. The free online video game allows players to step into the role of an exploration team member in a futuristic 3D lunar settlement.

In the game scenario, NASA is pursuing lunar colonization, research and exploration at a small outpost called Moonbase Alpha. Using solar energy and regolith processing, the moon base has become self-sufficient and expansion plans are in process. In Moonbase Alpha, the player assumes the role of an astronaut at the base who witnesses a meteorite impact that cripples the life support capability of the settlement.

This ‘First Person Explorer’ serious game includes both a single player capability and LAN or internet multiplayer gameplay for up to six active players on a team. Selectable maps will be available for specific player numbers (e.g., 2 player map, 4 player map, etc.). Each of these maps is represented and tracked individually within the game’s leader boards.

Thumbs up to the developers for making this available – I can imagine a number of “kids” (young and old) using their break to explore this – a good opportunity for some “research” in preparation for the new school year?
